Some modpacks give you an incredible factory to build, but eventually there is almost no reason to leave it.

Others fill the world with dungeons, dimensions and bosses, but give the person in your group who wants to automate everything very little to work with.

The best tech-and-exploration modpacks avoid that problem. They give you meaningful systems to automate and a world that is actually worth leaving your base to explore.

That is the standard we used for this list.

We are not counting a pack simply because it happens to contain Mekanism and a structure mod. We looked for packs where both sides can support a full playthrough: automation, logistics and increasingly complicated infrastructure on one side; dimensions, structures, loot, bosses and world progression on the other.

For friend groups, that balance matters even more. One person can spend an evening rebuilding the factory while somebody else disappears through a portal and comes back with something the group actually cares about.

As of September 2026, these are the packs that do that best.

Quick answer: which pack should you play?

    ModpackMinecraftBest forTech + exploration balance
FTB Evolution1.21.1 / NeoForgeGroups that want a strong mix of bothDeep tech and genuinely substantial exploration
Craftoria1.21.1 / NeoForgeFriend groups with different playstylesHuge amount of both, but relatively open-ended
Create Chronicles: The Endventure1.21.1 / NeoForgeCreate players who still want bosses and adventureSome of the strongest direct integration
MC Eternal 21.20.1 / ForgeAdventure-heavy groups that still want serious techExploration-leaning, but with real automation
All the Mods 101.21.1 / NeoForgeGroups where everyone wants to do something differentEnormous breadth, looser integration
MeatballCraft1.12.2 / ForgeExperienced players wanting a very long-term worldExtremely deep tech and dimensional progression

These aren't six interchangeable kitchen-sink packs. The important difference is how each one connects building machines with actually going somewhere.

FTB Evolution1. FTB Evolution - the strongest overall balance

    • Minecraft: 1.21.1
    • Loader: NeoForge
    • Current version: 1.44.0
    • Best for: A group that genuinely wants both large-scale technology and exploration

FTB Evolution is probably the most straightforward answer to the question behind this article.

Its technology side is not there just to justify a Tech tag. You can go deep into Mekanism, including its later power progression, while also building around Modern Industrialization, Immersive Engineering, Ender IO, Actually Additions, Applied Energistics-related systems and other automation mods. FTB has continued adding and expanding dedicated quest lines for those systems rather than simply dropping the mods into the pack and leaving you alone. Feed The Beast

    Exploration gets comparable attention.

The Overworld uses Terralith and Oh The Biomes We've Gone, while Dungeon Crawl and other structure systems give you more to find inside it. Beyond the normal dimensions, Evolution includes places such as Eternal Starlight and The Afterdark, along with the unusual Infinity Caves and underwater NauTec progression. Feed The Beast

That is the main reason Evolution ranks so highly for this particular use case. A large tech pack can easily reach the point where every resource comes from a machine, bee, quarry or farm and exploration becomes irrelevant. Evolution gives players more reasons to keep moving through the world even once the factory has become powerful.

It is also particularly good for a small multiplayer group because players do not need to follow the same activity at the same time. One person can work through industrial progression, another can chase gear and loot, and someone else can spend the session opening up new areas of the world. Current community servers describe exactly that kind of play: building, automating and exploring at different speeds inside the same long-running world. Reddit

    The downside

Evolution is a large pack with heavy world generation, and that becomes relevant on a server.

There have been recent multiplayer reports of crashes and world-generation problems when new terrain is generated quickly. In one 2026 discussion, a contributor to Evolution specifically pointed to Infinity Caves as one source of heavy generation and recommended pregenerating chunks on servers. Another server owner in the same discussion reported that pregenerating roughly a 10,000-block radius made exploration far less disruptive afterward. Reddit

FTB recommends 8 GB of memory for the client and Java 21. The server side should also be treated as a serious modded workload rather than a lightly modded vanilla server. Feed The Beast

Choose FTB Evolution if... you have a group where somebody wants to disappear into Mekanism and industrial automation, somebody else wants dungeons and dimensions, and you don't want either player to feel like they picked the wrong modpack.

As of September 2026, FTB Evolution is still being actively updated; version 1.44.0 was released on September 15. Feed The Beast

Craftoria2. Craftoria - best for a mixed friend group

    • Minecraft: 1.21.1
    • Loader: NeoForge
    • Current version: 1.37.0
    • Best for: Groups where everyone tends to play modded Minecraft differently

    Craftoria takes a different approach.

Instead of forcing everyone through one narrow progression route, it gives you an enormous sandbox and lets players specialize. The current pack advertises 500+ mods and more than 2,000 quests, with dedicated tech, exploration, magic and progression systems. Version 1.37.0 was released in September 2026, so it remains very actively maintained. CurseForge

For factory players, there is a lot to build around. The current mod list includes major systems such as Mekanism and Modern Industrialization, alongside Applied Energistics expansions, logistics tools and many other automation options. GitHub

But Craftoria also gives the people who keep running away from the base somewhere to go.

Its official wiki lists The Bumblezone, Eternal Starlight, Deeper and Darker's Otherside, and Twilight Forest among its major dimensions. Apotheosis world tiers also progressively introduce tougher mobs and stronger gear as the world advances. Team AOF

This makes Craftoria very good for the classic modded-server situation where your Discord call slowly splits into departments.

One player is building machines. One is doing magic. Two players have gone to Twilight Forest and haven't been seen for three hours. Someone else has somehow started building a railway nobody asked for. And all of them are still playing the same pack.

    Where Craftoria is weaker

The trade-off is that having a huge amount of tech and exploration isn't the same as tightly connecting them.

Craftoria generally gives you freedom rather than constantly forcing the explorer back into the factory or the engineer into the next dungeon.

For many multiplayer groups, that is actually an advantage.

But if you specifically want a carefully designed loop where boss fights unlock automation and automation unlocks more adventure progression, the next pack does that better.

There is also some mixed feedback around the quest book. Craftoria officially offers guided progression and thousands of quests, but players have noted that some technology chapters feel much more developed than some of the boss, equipment or other progression paths. CurseForge

Choose Craftoria if... you want a shared modded world rather than a shared checklist. For groups of three, four or five friends with very different interests, that can be more important than having perfectly linear progression.

Create Chronicles: The Endventure3. Create Chronicles: The Endventure - best integration of automation and adventure

    • Minecraft: 1.21.1
    • Loader: NeoForge
    • Current version: 2.0.0
    • Best for: Players who like Create but still want a clear reason to fight bosses and explore

If this article were ranking packs purely by how directly technology and exploration interact, The Endventure would be one of the most interesting choices here.

The premise is simple: you need to collect 12 unique Ender Eyes to unlock access to the End.

But instead of obtaining them all through combat or crafting, their fragments come from two sides of the game: boss encounters and Create-based automation challenges. Those systems feed into a market and token progression that ultimately serves the same objective. CurseForge

That sounds like a small distinction, but it fixes a common problem with mixed modpacks.

In many packs, you can build a factory or go adventuring. In The Endventure, those activities contribute to the same journey.

Exploration gives you special chests and currency. Boss progression contributes toward the Eyes. Engineering challenges provide their own tokens. Even food automation matters: automated cooking is tied to permanent health increases that help prepare you for harder combat. CurseForge

On the exploration side, the pack includes Eternal Starlight, bosses from systems such as L'Ender's Cataclysm and Bosses of Mass Destruction, world generation from Oh The Biomes We've Gone, and larger structure/dungeon content. The modpack creator explicitly describes its boss progression as being tied into the Endventure objective. CurseForge

The pack is also designed with multiplayer in mind.

The important limitation: this is not a giant tech pack

Do not pick The Endventure expecting the industrial depth of FTB Evolution or ATM10.

Its technology is deliberately centered around Create and Create addons. The creator describes the pack as having relatively light automation and minimal recipe changes. CurseForge

That makes it considerably more approachable, but also gives dedicated tech players fewer completely different industrial systems to master.

This is actually why it belongs so high on this list. It isn't trying to win by installing every machine mod available. It is trying to make the machines you build matter to the adventure.

Choose The Endventure if... you like the idea of dividing your group between the people designing contraptions and the people preparing for the next boss - while both groups are still pushing the same progression forward.

It is also one of the better options here for players who have looked at enormous kitchen-sink packs and thought, I don't want 500 mods. I just want a reason to build cool machines.

The current 2.0.0 release is for Minecraft 1.21.1 and was published in May 2026 with official server files. CurseForge

MC Eternal 24. MC Eternal 2 - best if exploration matters slightly more

    • Minecraft: 1.20.1
    • Loader: Forge
    • Current version: 1.3
    • Best for: Groups that want bosses, loot and exploration without reducing tech to a side activity

MC Eternal 2 leans further toward the adventure side than FTB Evolution or Craftoria.

That is not the same as being an RPG pack with three machines thrown into it.

There is still real technology here: Create and its addons support mechanical factories and transport, while Mekanism goes all the way into fission and fusion reactor territory. CurseForge

Where MC Eternal 2 separates itself is how aggressively it fills the world with things to do.

The official description emphasizes its overhauled world generation, hundreds of quests, structures, dungeons, monsters, bosses, artifacts, collectibles and custom dimensions. CurseForge

There is also a particularly good example of how exploration can matter to technical progression: osmium is tied to the custom Great Below dimension. Rather than every important technology resource being available underneath your base, at least part of industrial progression pushes you somewhere unusual. CurseForge

That is exactly the sort of connection we were looking for when making this list.

Why it works well with friends

MC Eternal's entire identity has traditionally been about having many different things to pursue.

A player who loves combat can hunt bosses. A builder can work with MineColonies. Someone else can get completely absorbed in Create. The engineer can build Mekanism reactors while the rest of the server is collecting artifacts.

That diversity gives a server longevity because progress doesn't depend on everyone wanting to do the same task.

    The downside: it is heavy

MC Eternal 2 is a huge pack, and recent player feedback is divided on performance.

Some players describe the current pack as polished and especially strong for boss-focused adventure play. Others report that its size can translate into high system requirements, FPS problems or occasional bugs. Reddit

That does not make it a bad server pack, but it does mean we wouldn't choose it for a low-end machine simply because it is technically on Minecraft 1.20.1.

Version 1.3 was released on September 16, 2026, with an updated official server pack published on September 22. CurseForge

Choose MC Eternal 2 if... your group's first question is usually "what dungeon are we doing tonight?", but at least one person will be deeply disappointed if the answer to every resource problem isn't build a more ridiculous machine.

All the Mods 105. All the Mods 10 - best when everyone wants something different

    • Minecraft: 1.21.1
    • Loader: NeoForge
    • Current version: 8.2
    • Best for: Long-running servers where players want maximum freedom

All the Mods 10 is the obvious giant on this list.

It contains roughly 500 mods, a large quest system and a defined endgame, and it continues to receive frequent updates. ATM10 8.2 was released on September 22, 2026. CurseForge

On the technology side, there is enough content to lose entire weeks to automation.

The current pack includes systems around Mekanism, Modern Industrialization, large storage networks, power generation and a long list of complementary technical mods.

Exploration is equally broad. The current mod set includes Eternal Starlight, The Aether, The Bumblezone, Twilight Forest, The Undergarden and Explorify, among other dimension and structure content. GitHub

So why isn't ATM10 automatically number one?

Because there is an important difference between having both things and making both things depend on each other.

    ATM10 is fundamentally broad.

You can spend an enormous amount of time optimizing technology while barely caring about some of its adventure content. Another player can chase dimensions, gear and bosses while barely touching the machinery somebody else has built.

That is less cohesive than The Endventure - but it is also exactly why ATM works so well on some multiplayer servers.

ATM10 is excellent when specialization is the point

If four people join a server and all four want something different from modded Minecraft, ATM10 is hard to beat.

You do not need to convince the explorer to become an engineer. You do not need to convince the engineer to fight every optional boss. Everyone can establish their own ridiculous corner of the same world and regroup when their goals overlap.

The downside is choice overload. Players regularly describe ATM10 as overwhelming, particularly when they are new to modern tech mods or expect its quests to behave like a tightly guided progression pack. Reddit

Choose ATM10 if... your group does not actually want one playstyle. You want a server where somebody can build a reactor, somebody can make a magical base, somebody can explore dimensions, and another person can spend two weeks making an Applied Energistics network unnecessarily perfect.

    That freedom is ATM10's strength.

    MeatballCraft6. MeatballCraft - the extreme long-term option

    • Minecraft: 1.12.2
    • Loader: Forge
    • Current version: 0.18.6.4 prerelease
    • Best for: Experienced modded players who want a world that can last an absurdly long time

Yes, it is on Minecraft 1.12.2. And yes, it still belongs in a 2026 article.

MeatballCraft has continued receiving substantial development years after most players would expect a 1.12 pack to be finished. Version 0.18.6.4 was released in August 2026, and its creator says the pack is now content-complete even though it remains labelled prerelease while final polish, quest rewards and lore are worked on. CurseForge

MeatballCraft describes itself as an expert tech-RPG pack, and that description is much more literal than it sounds.

Its technology progression is enormous, with large automation chains and legacy systems from the 1.12 era. Its dimensional side is just as excessive.

The project's own documentation lists dimensions including Twilight Forest, The Aether, Erebus, The Betweenlands, several AbyssalCraft worlds, space destinations, DivineRPG dimensions, Lost Cities and many custom locations. GitHub

The result is not "a tech pack with some dungeons." It is closer to an attempt to turn a huge section of classic modded Minecraft into one interconnected progression game.

Recent updates have continued expanding or refining enormous automation objectives, and the creator describes the later game as a genuine test of the infrastructure and logistics you have spent the playthrough building. Reddit

Do not start here if you're new to modded Minecraft

MeatballCraft's biggest strength is also its biggest warning.

    It is huge.

Even experienced players report becoming lost in its systems and progression. In a 2026 discussion where a newer tech player asked whether MeatballCraft would be suitable as a first serious modpack, the community response was effectively the opposite: the pack assumes a lot and can be extremely overwhelming. Reddit

This is not where we'd send somebody who has just discovered Create.

Choose MeatballCraft if... you and your group actively want a project. Not a two-week Minecraft phase. Not "we'll kill the dragon this weekend." A project.

If part of the fun is looking at a ridiculous late-game objective and realizing that you'll need new factories, new dimensions and another hundred hours of infrastructure before you're ready, MeatballCraft offers something the newer packs rarely attempt.

Which one should your group choose?

If you're still stuck, think about what usually happens after the first few nights on your server.

If the same people want to build factories and go adventuring together, start with FTB Evolution.

If everyone immediately splits up and develops their own obsession, Craftoria or ATM10 makes more sense.

If the group loves Create and wants a clearer shared objective, Create Chronicles: The Endventure is probably the most elegant fit.

If combat, bosses and loot are what actually get everyone online at the same time, choose MC Eternal 2.

And if your group considers a 200-hour modpack "a bit short," you already know why MeatballCraft is here.

Tech + exploration packs can be unusually hard on Minecraft servers

There is a reason some servers feel perfectly fine on the first night and begin struggling weeks later.

A pack focused only on exploration tends to put pressure on the server while players are generating new terrain.

A large technical pack tends to become heavier later, once bases contain hundreds of machines, inventories, pipes, farms, mobs and chunk-loaded systems.

A pack that combines both eventually makes the server deal with both workloads at once.

That is why simply looking at a hosting plan's RAM number is not enough.

For large modpacks, CPU performance and tick time matter heavily. Fast exploration can force the server to generate large amounts of terrain, while a mature automated base keeps adding work every tick.

FTB Evolution gives us a good real example. Players reported instability around rapid world generation, and a pack contributor recommended pregenerating terrain to reduce the load caused by players flying into fresh chunks. Reddit

For a long-term modded server, we generally care about a few things:

    • Backups before pack updates
    • Monitoring TPS/MSPT, not just memory usage
    • Sensible chunk-loading limits
    • Pregeneration where heavy worldgen makes it worthwhile
    • Finding the actual machine, entity, chunk or mod causing lag instead of blindly adding more RAM

That last point becomes particularly important on packs like ATM10, Evolution and Craftoria. A lagging server may have plenty of free memory while one player's factory or rapidly generated terrain is still pushing tick time through the roof.

This is also where managed modded hosting can make more sense than treating the server like a disposable VPS. With Piggo, the idea is that if the pack crashes, an update goes wrong or your server suddenly develops a performance problem, you can message us and have someone actually investigate it rather than being left alone with a control panel.

Good packs that didn't quite make this list

There are several packs we looked at that technically contain both technology and exploration, but don't fit this article's definition quite as well.

    FTB NeoTech

FTB NeoTech is still being updated in 2026 and has an excellent technical lineup: Modern Industrialization, AE2, Immersive Engineering, Actually Additions, Mekanism and more. Version 1.13.0 was released in August 2026. CurseForge

But FTB itself describes NeoTech primarily as a pack for technology players. There is exploration content, but the main reason to choose NeoTech is the factory.

For this specific list, FTB Evolution is the better FTB recommendation.

    Enigmatica 10

Enigmatica 10 is actively developed on Minecraft 1.21.1 and contains technology, exploration, magic, multiplayer and quest content. Its latest stable release is 1.31.0, with a newer 1.32.0 beta published in August 2026. CurseForge

The reason we're not placing it above the six main recommendations is simply maturity. The project's own page still describes parts of the pack as something that will be expanded as development continues. CurseForge

It may become a much stronger candidate later.

    Create Chronicles: Bosses & Beyond

Bosses & Beyond actually fits the tech-and-exploration concept very well. It combines Create automation with bosses, magic, custom recipes and more than 800 quests. CurseForge

The issue is mainly recency: its current 2.5.3 release is still on Minecraft 1.20.1 and dates from July 2025. CurseForge

For most groups starting a new server in 2026, we'd begin with the newer Create Chronicles: The Endventure.

But if you specifically want a tougher and more heavily gated Create progression pack, Bosses & Beyond remains worth looking at.

    Our picks by playstyle

Want the best all-round combination? Play FTB Evolution.

Playing with friends who all enjoy different parts of modded Minecraft? Play Craftoria.

Love Create and want automation to actually connect to bosses and progression? Play Create Chronicles: The Endventure.

Want more bosses, loot and dangerous exploration without sacrificing real machinery? Play MC Eternal 2.

Want maximum freedom and an enormous amount of content? Play All the Mods 10.

Want an expert pack that might become your group's home for hundreds of hours? Play MeatballCraft.

There isn't one universal winner because the best balance depends on what your group means by tech and exploration.

For some players, that means a giant factory with an occasional dungeon trip. For others, it means building machinery specifically because the next dimension, boss or progression step demands it.

The important part is choosing a pack where both sides still matter after the first weekend.
