FTB Skies 2 Aero: First Look + How to Host a Server on Launch Day

FTB Skies 2 Aero just launched today — July 17, 2026. It's a standalone modpack that takes the FTB Skies 2 skyblock foundation and adds Create Aeronautics at the core. The tagline from FTB says it all: "fly higher and build bigger than you ever imagined."
This guide covers everything we know about the pack on launch day, what your server needs to run it, and how to get your friend group into the sky as fast as possible.
We'll update this post as more information becomes available from the community.
What is FTB Skies 2 Aero?
FTB Skies 2 Aero is a skyblock modpack built on the FTB Skies 2 experience — the same progression-driven skyblock framework with custom questing, floating island worldgen, and deep tech and magic integration — but with Create Aeronautics added as the central feature.
Create Aeronautics lets players build and pilot actual flying ships. Airships, flying contraptions, aerial bases — it's one of the most ambitious Create addon mods available and it fundamentally changes how you interact with the skyblock environment. In a normal skyblock pack, moving between islands means elytra or teleportation. In Skies 2 Aero, you can build a flying vessel and pilot it between them.
The pack also includes a custom AeroScoop mechanic — a datapack-driven sifting system tied to the Aeronautics theme, with mesh-based recipes that filter different resources depending on biome and mesh type. This is custom content built specifically for this modpack, not a standard CurseForge mod.
FTB describes it as: "the sky is no longer the limit."
What Makes Aero Different From Standard FTB Skies 2?
FTB Skies 2 (the base pack, released June 2025) is built around three resource generation paths — Crystalmancy, Cultivation, and Prospecting — with the Create mod as one option among many for the tech path.
Skies 2 Aero reorients the entire pack around Create and specifically Create Aeronautics. The flying ship mechanics aren't an optional sideshow — they're the central experience. If your friend group has been waiting for a skyblock pack where you actually pilot airships between floating islands rather than just build on them, this is it.
The pack is also brand new. As of today's launch, there are almost no guides, wikis, server tutorials, or community resources for Skies 2 Aero yet. Everything in this post represents what we know from the official FTB announcement, the trailer, and the companion mod repository. As the community explores the pack over the next weeks, we'll update this guide with server-specific findings.
Server Requirements for FTB Skies 2 Aero
Exact official requirements haven't been published yet as of launch day. Based on what we know from the base FTB Skies 2 pack and the resource profile of Create Aeronautics specifically, here are our recommended starting specs:
| Players | Recommended RAM |
|---|---|
| 2-4 | 8 GB |
| 4-6 | 10 GB |
| 6-10 | 12 GB |
Why Create Aeronautics adds significant load:
Standard Create contraptions are demanding — moving parts, rotational physics, block entity processing. Create Aeronautics goes further by running physics simulations on entire flying structures. A large airship with dozens of Create components moving through the skyblock world generates substantial server-side processing load that static contraptions don't.
This means Aero's RAM and CPU requirements will likely exceed the base Skies 2 pack, especially once players start building larger vessels and flying them simultaneously. We recommend starting at 10GB for groups of 4-6 rather than the minimum, and monitoring TPS actively in the first few sessions.
Java version: NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1 — Java 21 required. Same as base Skies 2.
Modloader: NeoForge. Not standard Forge. Confirm your server is specifically running NeoForge before setup.
We'll update this section with confirmed requirements as the community publishes server performance data over the next week.
What to Expect in the First Sessions
Based on the trailer and companion mod details, here's what the early game experience looks like:
You start on a skyblock island — likely a themed starting island similar to base Skies 2's options. Early progression involves basic Create mechanics and resource generation before you have the materials to start building aerial contraptions.
The AeroScoop mechanic appears to be an early-game resource generation tool — a mesh-based sifting system where you filter raw materials to gather resources. Think a Create-compatible version of skyblock's classic gravel sifting, but with biome-specific drops and mesh tiers.
As progression advances, players move toward building their first flying vessel. This is where Skies 2 Aero's central gameplay loop begins — designing airships, testing flight, expanding aerial reach to new floating islands.
The companion mod (FTB Skies 2: Aero Companion) adds modpack-specific fixes, content additions, and mixins that tie the experience together. This is a custom layer FTB built specifically for this pack — it's not something you'll find documented on a generic Create Aeronautics wiki.
How to Set Up an FTB Skies 2 Aero Server
Step 1: Get the server files
FTB publishes server files through their server files browser. As of today's launch, check feed-the-beast.com/modpacks/server-files for the Skies 2 Aero server pack. Download the correct server files — not the client modpack.
Step 2: Configure Java 21
Run java -version in terminal to confirm. Must show Java 21. If you're running an older version, update before attempting to start the server.
Step 3: Set RAM allocation
For a group of 4-6 starting point:
java -Xms4G -Xmx10G -jar neoforge-[version].jar nogui
Adjust Xmx based on your available RAM. Don't allocate more than 80% of total system RAM.
Step 4: Accept EULA
Open eula.txt, change eula=false to eula=true.
Step 5: First startup
Expect 5-15 minutes on first launch while NeoForge loads all mods and builds registries. Don't kill the process if it appears to hang — this is normal for large NeoForge packs on 1.21.1.
Step 6: Test flight before opening to the group
Before everyone joins, do a brief solo test to confirm Create Aeronautics is functioning server-side. Build a minimal flying contraption, test flight, confirm no errors in console. Aero's physics systems are the most likely source of first-launch issues — better to find them solo than mid-session with five friends waiting.
Why FTB Skies 2 Aero is Worth Your Group's Time
The specific combination of skyblock + Create Aeronautics is genuinely new. There are other skyblock packs. There are other Create packs. A skyblock pack where aerial ship construction is the central mechanical loop — built and supported by FTB with custom quest integration and dedicated companion mod — hasn't existed at this level before.
For friend groups who've played through standard skyblock before and found it repetitive, the aerial dimension adds a genuinely different dynamic. Instead of progression being vertical (better resources, better automation), Aero's progression adds a horizontal dimension — your base expands through space, your reach grows as your ships improve, islands that were distant become accessible.
And for groups who love Create specifically, this is the pack where Create Aeronautics gets the full treatment rather than being one mod among hundreds.

FAQ
Is FTB Skies 2 Aero a separate pack from FTB Skies 2? Yes. Skies 2 Aero is a standalone modpack built on the Skies 2 foundation but with Create Aeronautics as the central experience. You can't upgrade a Skies 2 server to Aero — they're separate packs with separate server files.
What modloader does FTB Skies 2 Aero use? NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. Not standard Forge.
How much RAM does FTB Skies 2 Aero need? Official requirements haven't been published yet. We recommend 8 GB minimum for small groups, 10 GB for groups of 4-6, 12 GB for larger groups or heavy late-game airship builds.
Will existing FTB Skies 2 worlds work in Aero? No. Different modpack, different worldgen, different progression. Start fresh.
Is Create Aeronautics stable on servers? It has improved significantly and FTB's integration work in the companion mod addresses modpack-specific stability issues. As with any launch-day pack, expect some rough edges in the first week — FTB typically patches actively in the days following a release.
Can Piggo install FTB Skies 2 Aero for me? Yes. Send us the pack name and we handle everything — NeoForge setup, Java 21, JVM tuning, first startup. Free 48-hour trial to test before committing.
